Workstations that feature poor ergonomics can cause severe health problems, in many cases in a slowly progressing, almost unnoticed, and very often neglected way. Spending prolonged periods sitting on an uncomfortable chair, at an uncomfortable desk, in a poorly lit environment, staring at a vibrating computer screen has multiple negative effects – here are some:

  • Musculoskeletal problems – spending most of the day seated on an uncomfortable chair can cause strain to the muscles, the joints, and the bones. The most common symptoms associated with poor workstation ergonomics are pain and stiffness in the neck and in the back, numbness or tingling in the legs, pain in the shoulders and in the arms. If neglected, these pains and aches can turn into more severe problems, such as inflammations and degenerative conditions;
  • Headaches and migraines – poor workstation ergonomics can also lead to headaches, either caused by the strain to the neck area or if the work area is not properly illuminated, by the strain caused to the eyes;
  • Decreased productivity – productivity and workstation ergonomics are closely related. No one is able to work at the top of their capacity in an uncomfortable, poorly lit environment, therefore proper workplace ergonomics is essential for enabling efficient work.
